Silk Sarongs Make the Perfect Dress for a Destination Wedding

silk sarongWhen most women hear the word “sarong”, they immediately think of a short and sexy wrap skirt to be worn over bikini bottoms.  Or they may picture a colorful sarong dress that can be worn out to dinner on a tropical vacation.  But few women would imagine the silk sarong – a style that has become a top pick among fashion editors around the world.

The Sheer Sarong is a Trend on the Beach and beyond

sheer sarongsWomen who love tropical vacations usually own at least one sarong or sarong dress.  These versatile wraps can be worn in dozens of different ways, each of them very flattering to a woman’s figure.  But there is a new type of sarong that is making “waves” on beaches all over the world; it is a “sheer sarong” and it is definitely causing a stir in the fashion world.

While you probably won’t see many women over 30 wearing a sheer sarong, the more adventurous types are buying as many as they can find.  A sheer coverup like a black sheer sarong may not seem all that revealing on the beach, but these translucent little numbers are being seen in more nightclubs than beaches, especially in the islands.  Many of the sheer sarongs available online are trimmed with colorful shells in the fringe, which makes them versatile enough to be worn as an evening shawl.

Wedding Planners Recommend a Wedding Sarong for your Beach Wedding

wedding sarongAs more couples plan “destination weddings”, their needs for wedding attire have changed to suit the location. And since most destination weddings are held at a tropical vacation spot, brides are starting to look at the wedding sarong as the ideal alternative to the fancy wedding gown.

Wedding sarongs can be a simple white sarong dress with beads or lace for embellishment, or they can look as elaborate as a formal gown. It all depends on your taste, but wearing a Hawaiian wedding sarong makes it a lot easier to move around on the beach, and they tie in well with a Caribbean themed ceremony.

Going on a Cruise this winter? Don’t Forget Your Sarong Skirts!

sarong skirtsAs someone who enjoys a winter cruise getaway every year, I have learned never to rely on department stores and shopping malls as a source for cruisewear.  Their selection of cruise clothing is usually geared toward an older woman who likes everything to be color coordinated and “safe”.  I enjoy wearing nice clothing, but that doesn’t mean I like to dress conservatively.  When I visit the islands, I want to look like an islander, not a cruise ship passenger.  But how does one pull off the “island look” without spending a lot of money? Two words: Sarong Skirts.

Sarong skirts are the “secret weapon” of most women who enjoy more than just the occasional tropical getaway.  As someone who island-hops quite regularly, I can always tell which women have a cruise wardrobe and which ones just bought a few coordinating sets at the local mall.  Before you start thinking I am model-thin and would look great in anything, let me correct your image of me.  I am a 45 year old mother of two who normally wears a size 12-14. Sarong skirts have become a secret weapon for me, and countless other women around the world because they flatter everyone.

I’ve heard of a Sarong, but what is a Pareo?

pareoSo you think you know a lot about fashion, but you’ve never heard of a “pareo”?  Well join the club.  The word “pareo” or “pāreu” is the Tahitian word for a wraparound skirt, and it refers to any piece of fabric that is worn around the body.  While some people may think it is something more exotic, the word pareo is actually synonymous with “sarong”.  (Those Tahitians – they have a fancy way of saying everything!).

Sarongs for Women – A Longstanding Tradition around the Globe

sarongs for womenWomen’s sarongs may seem like a recent invention, and something that is only seen at the beach, but in reality, sarongs for women have been a part of many cultures around the world.  The most common type of women sarong is a large length of colorful fabric that is wrapped around the waist or worn as a skirt.  The common belief is that women from Western cultures first saw women’s sarongs while visiting Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands and parts of the Arabian Peninsula.  They may have also been worn in the Horn of Africa.  Fabrics were usually a woven plaid or checkered pattern, or a colorful batik dyed cloth.

Today’s modern sarongs for women are more likely to be made from machine printed fabrics, in floral designs that depict plants and animals, but it is still possible to buy hand-dyed batik sarongs from island boutiques.  What makes a women sarong so attractive is the way it shows off the waist while providing a modest cover-up for the beach or pool.  Most women’s sarongs are “one-size-fits-all”, making them easy to buy without the need to try them on.  Because women fit the same sarong year after year, they can be worn for many years to come.

American women first began wearing these colorful cover-ups after dozens of motion pictures were made with an island theme.  One famous actress from the 1930s and 40s was often called “the Sarong Girl” after she starred in multiple movies of this genre.  Her name was Dorothy Lamour, and she was most famous for her role in The Hurricane (1937).

It is much easier to buy sarongs for women today than it was in the past.  Women no longer need to visit an island resort to find a selection of women’s sarongs.  Why not wrap yourself in tropical beauty with authentic sarongs for women, direct from Hawaii? There are plenty of colorful designs to choose from online at HawaiianSarong.com.
